The Black Cats are looking for options in a host of positions during the winter trading period, with Parkinson keen to transform a struggling squad.
So could Sunderland look to unearth some lower league gems this January? We take a look at 13 players who the Black Cats could be looking to seal a deal for once the window opens:
1. Bez Lubala (Crawley Town)
The 21-year-old has really caught the eye at Crawley this season, after the Red Devils took a punt on the former Birmingham City youngster. He’s netted eight times already this term and is reportedly attracting Premier League interest. Photo: Bryn Lennon
2. Brandon Hanlan (Gillingham)
Impressive in his two appearances against the Black Cats already this season, Hanlan’s pace and creativity are desperately lacking in Sunderland’s side. He’d be a sensible - and no doubt popular - addition. Photo: Jack Thomas
3. Michael Doughty (Swindon Town)
Doughty was linked with a move to the Stadium of Light last January, and is perhaps the creative midfielder the Black Cats have been missing. He’s typically played in a number ten role this term - to great effect. Photo: Pete Norton
4. Charlie Kirk (Crewe Alexandra)
Parkinson is set to strengthen his forward line in the January window, and wide forward Kirk could prove an appealing option. He’s scored six times and registered four assists already this season in an impressive Crewe side. Photo: Pete Norton
