The Black Cats are looking for options in a host of positions during the winter trading period, with Parkinson keen to transform a struggling squad.
So could Sunderland look to unearth some lower league gems this January? We take a look at 13 players who the Black Cats could be looking to seal a deal for once the window opens:
5. Jarrad Branthwaite (Carlisle United)
The 17-year-old centre back has been a revelation this season and is reportedly being eyed by Premier League clubs. Sunderland, though, could well fancy their chances of sealing a deal for a relatively local youngster. Photo: Alex Davidson
6. Armand Gnanduillet (Blackpool)
This is another addition which would no doubt prove popular with supporters. Gnanduillet’s pace, power and goalscoring record could fit perfectly into how Parkinson wants to play - and his need for a prolific striker is apparent. Photo: Alex Livesey
7. Oliver Norburn (Shrewsbury Town)
Another who has been linked with Sunderland in the past, Norburn could add some much-needed energy and enthusiasm to the Black Cats’ engine room. It’s worth noting, though, that he signed a new three-year deal in July. Photo: Catherine Ivill
8. Callum Camps (Rochdale)
Camps caught the eye when he faced Sunderland earlier this season, and is another who could help transform Parkinson’s struggling midfield - while providing a much-needed attack-minded outlook. Photo: Lewis Storey
