Sunderland weigh up loan moves for talented youngsters after Jack Diamond's rapid rise

One of the key positives of Johnson's tenure so far has been the form of Jack Diamond, whose enterprising displays on the right wing have quickly made him an integral part of the new head coach's plans.

Young goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is one of the youngsters to make a strong early impression on Johnson, and is one potential candidate for a loan move in January.
The plan had initially been to send Patterson out to gain first-team experience in the summer, and Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical have been linked with a move next month.
Dan Neil is another player who has made a significant impression on staff since the summer, starring in the pre-season campaign.

Hide AdHe is yet to feature under Johnson but has continued to be close to the senior squad.
Johnson says that moving forward, the example of Diamond's role in a National League promotion for Harrogate Town last season could be key.
"I think we've got to nurture our young players, there's talent there, no doubt," Johnson told the club #SAFCUnfiltered podcast.
"We've got to select the right loans programme as well because I think it's a fine balance for a Category One academy at Sunderland, having been a little bit downtrodden in recent years in terms of good players we've lost.

"We've got to instil some belief, show the pathway to the first team and make sure that players understand that it's not a free ticket by any means, but if you're good enough, we will plan to get you through.
