Sunderland will be looking to strengthen during this summer’s transfer window – and may revisit some deals they’ve explored in the past.
The Black Cats have predominantly signed younger players in recent years, yet may have to tweak their model to add more experience to the squad. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman will be hoping the club can find the right balance, yet some of Sunderland’s former targets may no longer be available.
Here are some deals the Black Cats could revisit this summer and others they probably won’t.

13. Paik Seung-Ho (Birmingham) - Could revisit
Sunderland were considering a move for the South Korea international in January, before he signed for Birmingham from K League 1 side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The central midfielder, who has two years left on his contract, made 18 Championship appearances for The Blues, whose relegation to League One may mean player departures this summer. 14. Sam Tickle (Wigan) - Probably won't
While Sunderland are content with their goalkeeper options, there has been Premier League interest in Anthony Patterson. The Black Cats are confident they can keep the 24-year-old, who signed a new contract last year, but will have been aware of other options. Wigan keeper Tickle was a player reportedly on Sunderland’s radar, yet the 22-year-old has signed a new long-term contract with the Latics. Photo: Cameron Howard

15. Lamare Bogarde (Aston Villa) - Could revisit
The Athletic reported in January that Sunderland were showing strong interest in Aston Villa midfielder Bogarde. The 20-year-old spent the first half of the 2023/24 season on loan at League Two club Bristol Rovers. Photo: Getty Images

16. Charlie Cresswell (Leeds) - Probably won't
Sunderland have been credited with interest in Cresswell in the past, while the 21-year-old centre-back made just five appearances for Leeds during the 2023/24 season. The Black Cats look set to keep Luke O'Nien and Dan Ballard as their centre-back pairing for next season, though, while they signed Leo Hjelde from Leeds in January, who prefers playing in the heart of defence.
