Sunderland will be looking to strengthen during this summer’s transfer window – and may revisit some deals they’ve explored in the past.
The Black Cats have predominantly signed younger players in recent years, yet may have to tweak their model to add more experience to the squad. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman will be hoping the club can find the right balance, yet some of Sunderland’s former targets may no longer be available.
Here are some deals the Black Cats could revisit this summer and others they probably won’t.

9. Joe Gelhardt (Leeds) - Could revisit
Gelhardt played his part as Sunderland reached the play-offs during the 2022/23 season but has made just 10 Championship appearances for Leeds this term. The 22-year-old has three years left on his contract but will want to play regularly, whether that means leaving on loan or permanently. Photo: George Wood

10. Amad (Manchester United) - Probably won’t
Sunderland made attempts to re-sign the 21-year-old last summer and in January, yet United wouldn’t sanction the deal. Since then Amad has received more game time at Old Trafford, scoring a winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup and starting their last three Premier League games. Photo: Stu Forster

11. Josh Murphy (Oxford) - Could revisit
Sunderland were credited with interest in Murphy before he signed for Oxford in 2022. The 29-year-old has been linked with several Championship clubs, including the Black Cats, in recent weeks, after helping the Us win promotion from League One. He is also out of contract this summer, with Oxford understandably keen to keep him. Photo: Alex Pantling

12. Yann M’Vila (West Brom) - probably won’t
Following suggestions the midfielder could return to Sunderland in January, the 33-year-old signed a short-term contract at West Brom, where he made nine appearances. M’Vila will become a free agent again this summer, yet Sunderland look set to pursue other options. Photo: Jess Hornby
