Sunderland transfers: This is when Florent Ghisolfi can start making signings this summer

Everything Sunderland fans need to know about the summer transfer window as the Black Cats prepare to compete in the Europa League.

An intriguing summer transfer window lies in wait for Sunderland as they look to prepare their squad for a truly historic season.

Just under a fortnight has passed since the Black Cats claimed a home win against Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season to officially secure a place in next season’s Europa League and ensure the Stadium of Light hosts competitive European football for the first time.

The challenges that lie ahead in what will be a hectic campaign are all too obvious with Regis Le Bris and his squad set to play at least an additional eight fixtures as they take their place alongside the likes of Juventus, Marseille and AC Milan in the league phase of UEFA’s secondary club cup competition. That figure would be increased should they progress into the knockout stages and the schedule could be even more packed should Le Bris’ men also progress in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Former Black Cats star Darren Williams has already warned there is a need to strengthen in depth in a bid to cope with the rigours of such a busy fixture schedule and Sunderland have already been linked with all manner of weird and wonderful names ahead of the summer transfer window. A number of players have also been linked with moves away from the Stadium of Light with Wrexham said to be monitoring goalkeeper Anthony Patterson and forward Eliezer Mayenda is reportedly attracting attention from Championship newcomers West Ham United.

But when can Sunderland officially complete their first transfers of the summer and when does the summer transfer window come to an end?

The Premier League have confirmed the summer transfer window will officially open for business on Monday, June 15. However, deals can be put in place prior to that date and that is why we have seen a number of moves ‘completed’ since the end of last season. Those deals can not be formally completed until players can be registered with the Premier League and that can be done after the transfer window opens on Monday week.

When does the 2026 summer transfer window close?

There is actually a change to the closing date and time for this summer’s transfer window. Over the last two years, the summer transfer window has closed at 7pm - but that has been extended to 11pm on Tuesday, September 1 to allow clubs extra time to complete any business.

Can clubs receive extra time to complete transfers?

Yes! The deal sheet allows a club to confirm an agreement has been reached, granting an additional two hours to complete the rest of the paperwork. For an 11pm deadline such as the one in this year’s summer transfer deadline, the deal sheet cannot be submitted before 9pm and must arrive before the window closes. Once lodged, the clubs involved would then have until 1am to finalise the transfer.
