Sunderland and Aston Villa set for £35m striker blow as Black Cats target in line for contract extension

A round-up of the latest Sunderland-related transfer news and speculation...

Sunderland and Aston Villa both weighed up swoops for Colombian striker Kevin Viveros this summer, but the in-form talent could be on the cusp of signing a new deal with current club Athletico Paranaense, according to reports.

The 26-year-old is enjoying a rich purple patch in the Brazilian top flight, and has netted 17 times in 25 league outings so far this season. As such, both the Black Cats and the Villans have been keeping tabs on the player of late, with Sport Witness claiming that the Premier League pair both made tentative enquiries over his possible availability during the transfer window.

Ultimately, however, Viveros stayed put in South America, and now ESPN Brazil report that Athletico have reached a verbal agreement with the centre-forward over a new contract. His current agreement runs until 2028, but the Brazilian club are keen to secure his long-term future, and hand him a pay rise in the process.

With that in mind, it is suggested that any future deal for Viveros could cost a prospective suitor as much as £34.7 million - a significant jump compared to what he might have cost this summer.

Elsewhere, another mooted Sunderland target potentially in line for a contract extension is Sporting CP star Geny Catamo. The Black Cats tried without success to prise the winger away from Lisbon during the transfer window, and in an effort to fend off future interest, A Bola report that Sporting are eager to negotiate an extension to his current deal.

As things stand, Catamo’s contract runs until 2029, but the Portuguese club may look to add another year or two to his agreement, as well as increasing his salary in an effort to tie him down for a while to come.

For their part, it is easy to see why Sporting are so keen to retain Catamo’s services for as long as possible. After impressing last season, the Mozambique international has carried his eye-catching form into the new campaign, scoring two goals and assisting three more across his first six outings in all competitions this term. His latest strike came against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
