The 'irrational' feeling behind Régis Le Bris's bold Sunderland selection call at Brentford

Sunderland earned an important point at Brentford last week as Kevin Danso made his full debut

Régis Le Bris has praised Kevin Danso for his quick impact at Sunderland after an impressive full debut against Brentford last week.

The defender had only been in the building a couple of days following his deadline-day switch from Spurs, but the Sunderland head coach saw enough in a brief period to be confident he could play a key role.

Danso had a good game against one of the Premier League's strongest teams on home turf, and looks set to retain his place when Arsenal travel to the Stadium of Light this Saturday night.

“It was a very positive experience," Le Bris said.

"It was my feeling that it was the right thing to do. People might have thought, ‘Okay, Kevin is with us, but he has only been here for a couple of days, is he ready to play?’ If you just looked at it from a rational perspective, then probably not. But when you looked at it from my feeling, his experience and the connection with the lads, then it was, ‘Let’s go’. Playing at Brentford, we know it’s a tough place, really intense, really physical. But he showed from the first minute until the last one that he was ready. It was impressive."

Sunderland have signed Danso on an initial season-long loan, but there is an obligation-to-buy clause included if the club avoid relegation from the Premier League. A Europa League winner with extensive international experience, Le Bris believes the club's ability to sign Danso is a sign of how attractive the club has become to top players and evidence of the progress being made by the club.

“He is a great player, with great experience, great leadership and high standards," Le Bris said.

"It is really positive to sign a player like him. For Sunderland to be able to sign someone like that right now, it shows how attractive we are. That is a really positive thing.”

Danso’s introduction into the team allowed Nordi Mukiele to move across to right back, with Thomas Meunier pushing forward onto a more advanced right-sided role.
