Black Cats head coach Alex Neil and Wednesday boss Darren Moore have often played with a 3-5-2 system this season, and it’s likely that’s how both sides will line up at the Stadium of Light on Friday.
The two clubs will then meet again at Hillsborough for the second leg next week, with the winner progressing to this month’s play-off final at Wembley.
For a bit of fun we’ve made a combined starting XI with players from both clubs.
Here’s who made the cut:

9. CAM: Alex Pritchard (Sunderland)
It's been a joy to watch the playmaker at times this season and it's just a shame he has missed parts of the season due to injury setbacks. The 28-year-old returned to the starting XI at Morecambe last week and should be available to face Wednesday. Photo: JPI Media

10. ST: Nathan Broadhead (Sunderland) -
The Everton loanee, 24, is an injury doubt for the play-offs after he was forced off with an injury at Morecambe. It would be a massive blow for Sunderland if Broadhead does miss out, as the forward has scored 10 times in just 20 League One appearances this season and been prolific in front of goal. 11. ST: Ross Stewart (Sunderland)
Only Wigan's Will Keane scored more League One goals than Stewart this season, as the 24-year-old Scot found the net 24 times. Stewart has started every league game for the Black Cats this term and replaced the goals of Charlie Wyke from the last campaign. Photo: JPI Media
