Black Cats head coach Alex Neil and Wednesday boss Darren Moore have often played with a 3-5-2 system this season, and it’s likely that’s how both sides will line up at the Stadium of Light on Friday.
The two clubs will then meet again at Hillsborough for the second leg next week, with the winner progressing to this month’s play-off final at Wembley.
For a bit of fun we’ve made a combined starting XI with players from both clubs.
Here’s who made the cut:

5. RWB: Jack Hunt (Sheffield Wednesday)
Following his return to Hillsborough from Bristol City last year, the 31-year-old has been Wednesday's first-choice right wing-back this season, contributing with two league goals and five assists. Photo: Jacques Feeney

6. CM: Corry Evans (Sunderland)
It was a difficult start to the season for the Sunderland captain who struggled with his form and injury setbacks. Evans, 31, has been a regular starter under Neil, though, and produced some excellent performances in the middle of the park to help his side reach the play-offs. Photo: JPI Media

7. CM: Barry Bannan (Sheffield Wednesday)
A player who has looked a cut above League One level this campaign. Bannan, 32, has been influential in the Owls' midfield, scoring nine league goals and registering 12 assists. Photo: Jacques Feeney

8. LWB: Marvin Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday)
The 31-year-old was released by Middlesbrough last season but has slotted straight into Wednesday's starting XI at left wing-back. Johnson likes to deliver crosses into the box early and has contributed with seven assists in League One this season. Photo: George Wood
