Sunderland returned to Premier League action with a trip to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace. With the Black Cats continuing their early journey back in the top flight, all eyes were on how Régis Le Bris’ side would perform away from home. The travelling fans once again turned out in force, backing their team in numbers in the capital.
As ever, the focus quickly turned to individual displays across the pitch, with big performances needed at both ends as Sunderland looked to make their mark. From the new signings settling into life in the Premier League to the established squad members adjusting to the demands of top-flight football, there was plenty to keep an eye on throughout the afternoon.

5. LB: Reinildo Mandava
Reinildo Mandava always seemed to be in the right position during the first half and continued that form into the second half. Looks like an absolute masterstroke signing him on a free. 8 | Getty Images

6. CM: Granit Xhaka
Granit Xhaka anchored the midfield well and was always available for the ball. Controlled the tempo when Sunderland had the ball and marshalled his teammates. 7 | Sunderland's Granit Xhaka. Photo by Chris Fryatt.

7. CM: Noah Sadiki
He was bright during the opening exchanges as the midfielder looked to get forward more often than in previous matches this season. Worked well with Adingra on the left-hand side. Impressive once again. Subbed for Geertrudia with six minutes left to play. 8 | Sunderland's Noah Sadiki. Photo by Chris Fryatt.

8. CM: Habib Diarra
Habib Diarra was quiet in the first half for the most part, up against Palace's three centre-halves when trying to make forward runs. Saw a decent effort fly above Henderson's goal in the second half. Did well in his own box from set plays. 7 | Sunderland's Habib Diarra. Photo by Chris Fryatt.
