Exclusive:'Huge fan' - Phil Bardsley urges Sunderland to secure future of 'outstanding' talent

Phil Bardsley has hailed Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey.

Phil Bardsley has urged Sunderland to secure Brian Brobbey’s future at the club as they look to build a squad capable of competing in the Europa League this season.

The Dutchman played a key role in the Black Cats securing their spot on the continent during his debut campaign in England, leading the line to great effect and scoring seven goals in the Premier League. He would then go on to strike three times in four outings at this summer’s World Cup.

And in Bardsley’s opinion, it is imperative that Sunderland keep hold of Brobbey ahead of their upcoming European adventure. When asked about the club’s transfer plans during an exclusive interview with The Echo, courtesy of BetGoodwin, the former full-back said: “What I've seen, obviously, first hand, I've been really impressed.

“The only concern I'd have this season is Europe, and obviously with the three domestic competitions, you're going to have to have a strong squad. So it's going to be a difficult season. But I'm sure if they get players through the door that they can grow and kick on again.

“I mean, repeating last season will be difficult, don't get me wrong. But I think key as well will be hanging on to some of the best players. I think Brobbey’s outstanding. I really do. Huge fan of him. I think he had a great World Cup. I'd imagine teams have got their eyes on him. I think it's important that the club tie him down.”
