Sunderland, Newcastle United and Forest 'linked' with £50m transfer – the truth behind reports
Reports claiming Sunderland have agreed a deal for Lucas Bergvall are understood to be wide of the mark
Reports claiming Sunderland have reached a “full agreement” to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall are understood to be wide of the mark.
Football Insider had suggested the Black Cats submitted an offer for the Sweden international before striking an agreement, with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest also credited with an interest. However, it is understood no deal has been agreed, and the report does not reflect the current position surrounding Sunderland’s transfer business.

Bergvall would represent a hugely ambitious addition for Régis Le Bris’ side. The 20-year-old is valued at around £50million, with Tottenham likely to demand the best possible deal given his age and profile. The midfielder joined Spurs from Swedish club Djurgården in 2024 and later signed a long-term contract running until 2031, placing the London club in a strong negotiating position.
Bergvall can operate in several central midfield roles and is regarded as one of Sweden’s most promising young players. His age, technical quality and potential resale value would appear to fit Sunderland’s recruitment model on the surface, while the Black Cats are expected to add further quality before the summer window closes.
Thomas Meunier remains Sunderland’s only senior arrival at the time of writing, but Florent Ghisolfi has already indicated that the club are working through a more measured window after last summer’s extensive overhaul. For now, though, claims that Sunderland have reached a full agreement for Bergvall can be dismissed. The midfielder is not currently on his way to the Stadium of Light.
