Sunderland fans react to Tommy Watson cameo after Nordi Mukiele and Chris Rigg injury scares – moments missed
The moments you may have missed before, during and after the game between Brighton and Sunderland at the Amex Stadium
Sunderland headed to the Amex Stadium in a buoyant mood, sitting eighth in the Premier League table after 16 games and very much holding their own among some heavyweight company.
Régis Le Bris’ side arrived on the south coast on the back of a statement Wear-Tyne derby win over Newcastle United, a result that not only lifted belief inside the squad but also underlined just how quickly this group has adapted to life back in the top flight.
With seven wins already on the board and only four defeats, Sunderland’s form has kept them firmly in the conversation around the European places, level on points with Liverpool and Manchester United and just a few results behind the established top four.
Brighton, meanwhile, started the weekend just below the Black Cats, making this a significant meeting in the context of a congested mid-table. From pre-match moments to touchline flashpoints and post-match reactions, here are the moments you may have missed before, during and after Sunderland’s clash with Brighton at the Amex:
First meeting in the Premier League
Saturday’s contest at the Amex marked a small but notable piece of Sunderland history, with the Black Cats facing Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League for the first time. Despite both clubs spending recent seasons in England’s top flight, their paths had never crossed at this level until now.

The most recent meeting between the sides came back in August 2011, when Sunderland were beaten 1-0 away from home in the League Cup. Prior to that, league encounters were confined to the Championship, with the last Sunderland victory over Brighton arriving in October 2004, when the Black Cats claimed a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light. It added an extra layer of intrigue to the afternoon – a new chapter in a fixture with a relatively modest shared history, but one that finally stepped onto the Premier League stage.
Chris Rigg handed big chance by Régis Le Bris
Chris Rigg returned to Sunderland’s starting XI at Brighton as Régis Le Bris made four changes to the side that beat Newcastle United last weekend. The teenager was deployed on the right wing, with Le Bris sticking to a back four despite a number of senior absences caused by the Africa Cup of Nations.
Simon Adingra was also handed a significant opportunity on the left flank against his former club. The winger has endured a frustrating start to life on Wearside, with limited minutes contributing to his omission from Ivory Coast’s AFCON squad, but with Chemsdine Talbi and Bertrand Traoré both away on international duty, the stage was set for him to stake his claim.

Trai Hume returned at left-back in place of Reinildo, while Lutsharel Geertruida came into the starting XI and was expected to operate as the holding midfielder. Granit Xhaka partnered him, with Enzo Le Fée playing behind Brian Brobbey. Dennis Cirkin and Leo Hjelde were named in the matchday squad for the first time this season, while Habib Diarra was also among the substitutes ahead of his departure to join Senegal after the game.
Ex-Newcastle United man hammered by Sunderland away end
Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh was targeted by chants from the Sunderland supporters during the first half, owing to his previous spell at Newcastle United. Every touch was met with noise from the away end.
The reaction intensified when Minteh went down in the first half following a collision, shortly after a good chance for Sunderland involving Dan Ballard. As play was stopped and Minteh received treatment, the Sunderland fans made their feelings clear, adding another edge to an already lively atmosphere.
Tommy Watson spotted chatting to former teammates
Former Sunderland academy graduate Tommy Watson was spotted pitchside chatting with his former teammates Romaine Mundle, Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda ahead of the game.
Watson, who was named on the Brighton bench, came through Sunderland’s academy and etched his name into club folklore by scoring the winning goal in last season’s Championship play-off final. The forward completed a big-money move to Brighton in the summer, but there was a clear moment of familiarity as he caught up with familiar faces from his time on Wearside.
There was a warm reception late on for former Sunderland winger Watson, who was introduced for the closing stages with the game still finely balanced at 0-0 and only a few minutes of normal time remaining. Watson, a product of Sunderland’s academy and the scorer of last season’s Championship play-off final winner, was applauded by both the home supporters and the travelling Sunderland fans as he entered the action.
Injury scares and new Habib Diarra position
There was a brief injury scare for Sunderland just before the hour mark when Chris Rigg went down after a tangle of legs and was left limping heavily. The midfielder appeared in some discomfort initially, but was able to recover and continue, easing concerns on the bench.
Not long after, Régis Le Bris made a double change, with Rigg and Simon Adingra withdrawn. Habib Diarra made his return to the pitch alongside Romaine Mundle, with Diarra deployed on the right wing – a notable positional choice as Sunderland looked to manage the game heading into the final stages. Wilson Isidor also replaced Brobbey just after the 70th minute.

Nordi Mukiele was briefly a concern late on after appearing to limp following a collision with his own goalkeeper Robin Roefs. The defender had been superb throughout, producing a series of strong defensive interventions, and although he looked uncomfortable initially, the Frenchman was able to continue for the remaining minutes as Sunderland saw the game out.
