‘Mackem legend’ – Lynden Gooch and Corry Evans pay tribute to Dan Neil after Sunderland exit
Lynden Gooch and Corry Evans reflected on Dan Neil’s rise from academy prospect to Sunderland captain
Former Sunderland players Lynden Gooch and Corry Evans have both paid warm tributes to Dan Neil following confirmation of his departure from the club, reflecting on his journey from academy prospect to captain and Premier League promotion winner.
Neil’s exit brings to a close a long Sunderland chapter that began in the academy and culminated in leading his boyhood club back to the top flight. As tributes continue to emerge, Gooch offered a detailed insight into Neil’s early years and the work ethic that set him apart from a young age.
“From a young age, we were aware of Dan coming through the ranks and the potential he had,” Gooch said. “For me, it was about looking after him as a fellow academy lad and giving him the confidence to kick on when he reached the first team. He was a kid desperate to play for his football club - the club he loves.”
Gooch spoke at length about Neil’s dedication behind the scenes, highlighting the commitment that underpinned his rise into the senior side. “He’d spend hours on the training pitch and in the gym, doing everything he could to become the best player possible. Once he got his chance, he never looked back.”
Beyond the footballing side, Gooch also reflected on the personal relationship he shared with Neil and the memories formed during their time together at the club. “Not only a brilliant footballer, but a great lad too. Someone I’ve shared incredible memories with, both on and off the pitch. I know just how much it meant to him and his family to represent the club for all these years.”
Gooch described Neil’s career arc at Sunderland as extraordinary, pointing to the scale of what he achieved during his time on Wearside. “To go from academy graduate to winning three finals at Wembley, and captaining your boyhood club back to the Premier League, is quite simply incredible. You’ve done yourself, your family, and everyone at the AOL proud. No doubt a Mackem legend. Good luck in the next chapter, my friend.”

Former Sunderland captain Corry Evans also shared his thoughts, backing Neil to thrive in the next phase of his career and praising both his footballing ability and character. “Dan deserves nothing but the very best with this move. He has been an incredible player for Sunderland, coming through the Club’s Academy and going on to captain the team back to the Premier League - the stuff of dreams.”
Evans, who played alongside Neil in midfield, highlighted how much he enjoyed sharing the pitch with him and spoke highly of his influence away from matchdays. “I loved playing alongside him in midfield. A brilliant player and an even better person off the pitch. All the best at Ipswich!”
Neil leaves Sunderland having made more than 200 senior appearances and played a central role in the club’s climb from League One back to the Premier League. As tributes from former team-mates like Gooch and Evans show, his legacy is defined not only by medals and milestones, but by the respect he earned throughout the club.
