The Lutsharel Geertruida update that could open Sunderland up to Leeds United transfer threat

Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida could be on the move again this summer.

Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida is still facing an uncertain future on Wearside, potentially alerting the likes of Leeds United and Everton to his availability this summer.

The Dutchman spent the 2025/26 on loan at the Stadium of Light from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, with the Black Cats negotiating an option-to-buy clause as part of the initial agreement that brought him to the North East.

But according to reports on the continent, that clause - understood to be worth just shy of £20 million - has now expired, opening up Geertruida to the prospect of a move elsewhere over the coming weeks.

As explained by Sky Germany journalist Philipp Hinze: “There is interest in the Dutchman from several clubs, including teams from the Premier League, Serie A, and La Liga. RB Leipzig are aiming to sell Geertruida permanently this summer.”

For their part, however, Sunderland are not said to be out of the running to sign the 25-year-old entirely. Hinze continues: “Following fresh talks, Sunderland are back in the race, but are trying to negotiate a lower transfer fee, and therefore allowed the option to expire. No decision has been made yet. The defender can now unexpectedly use the stage of the upcoming World Cup to boost his prospects.”

Where could Lutsharel Geertruida end up if he leaves Sunderland?

Nevertheless, the decision to let Geertruida’s option-to-buy clause expire does expose Sunderland to the threat of rival interest, with several of their Premier League rivals touted as admirers of the versatile talent in recent weeks.

As per online outlet TEAMtalk, the likes of Leeds, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Crystal Palace have all been monitoring his situation during the latter stages of the campaign, while clubs in Italy, Germany, France, and Spain have also made enquiries to his parent club.

One team who have seemingly cooled their interest in Geertruida, though, are Liverpool. The Merseyside giants made an effort to sign the player during the January window as they grappled with an injury crisis, but following the departure of head coach Arne Slot - who previously worked alongside Geertruida at Feyenoord - Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof claims that the Black Cats loanee currently has no contact with transfer chiefs at Anfield.
