Maddison, who came through the ranks at Newcastle United, has frequently been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light given he is a supporter of the Black Cats.

However, the 26-year-old has not been considered a serious target in previous windows – and had been targeting a move to a Championship club.

That move became a reality in January when Maddison joined Hull on a half-season loan, with a view to that switch becoming permanent in the summer once his contract at Peterborough United expired.

But the Peterborough Telegraph are now reporting that Hull are not set to make a permanent move for the former Gateshead forward having been unimpressed with his performances thus far.

Prior to the EFL being suspended, Maddison had featured just seven times for the Tigers, scoring once.

Posh are willing to allow the player to remain with Hull until such a time as the Championship season is completed, with Darren Ferguson admitting Maddison is not part of his plans.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry said: “I’ve spoken to Grant McCann [Hull manager] and told him we would have no objections to Marcus staying at Hull for however long it takes to complete the season.

“Our manager doesn’t want him here.”

With a new contract offer from Peterborough looking unlikely, Maddison looks set to become a free agent this summer.
