Exclusive:Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips delivers verdict on club's start to the new Premier League campaign

Kevin Phillips has his say on Sunderland’s start to the new Premier League campaign.

Sunderland favourite Kevin Phillips has been reflecting on the club’s start to their second season back in the top flight - and believes Regis Le Bris will be ‘relatively happy’ with the start.

Sunderland tasted defeat on the opening day away at newcomers Ipswich Town but bounced back quickly in the 1-0 home win over Fulham at the Stadium of Light last weekend. Ahead of this Saturday afternoon’s clash away at Brentford, club legend Phillips has been giving his verdict.

Speaking to the Echo, via BestBettingSites.co.uk , Phillips said: “I think it's been a decent start. Of course, they would have liked maximum points on the board, but it's never easy going away first game to a team that's been promoted as well. I think there wasn't a lot in the game, conceded late. And then obviously your next game being at home, you've got to follow up with a win, and that's what they did, which was expected. So I wouldn't say they won it comfortably in the end, but they probably deserved to win it. So really, really pleased for them to get three points on the board, off and running.

“So it's been a steady start. I think the pressure's on, isn't it, from everyone on the outside, thinking they're just going to blow teams away, but it's not that easy. So I think they'll be relatively happy with the start. And I think they'll be relatively happy with the transfer window. I would say not every team is 100% happy with the window. They would always like more, but it's never that easy. So I think with the bodies they brought in, I think they brought six signings in - they managed to get a lot of players out the door, either on loan or moved on to free up spaces. Because we all know we need a decent-sized squad to compete on both levels in the Premier League and the Europa League. So overall, very satisfying.”
