Sunderland are hopeful of a transfer breakthrough in the ‘near future’ – according to assistant manager Steve Parkin.

The Black Cats are yet to make their move in the January transfer window, although manager Phil Parkinson is believed to be targeting as many as five new additions.

And while a host of names have been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light, Parkin would not be drawn on any reports – but admits conversations remain ongoing behind the scenes in a bid to seal new additions.

“Spinning plates, I think the description is,” he said, when asked for an update on the club’s transfer business.

“I’m not going to sit here and tell you who we are and aren't after.

“The manager has been speaking to the powers that be – the chairman and Hilly [Richard Hill] – and we’ve had long chats with TC [Tony Coton].

“Hopefully something will be happening in the near future.”

And the Black Cats are believed to be keen on Bristol City winger Hakeeb Adelakun as the Sunderland chief eyes ‘pace and power’ in the forward areas.

Antoine Semenyo is also a target for Parkinson, but is attracting interest from rivals Doncaster Rovers.

Sunderland aren’t expected to complete any additions before the visit of Lincoln City, and are set to monitor a number of ‘bumps and bruises’ prior to the visit of the Imps.
