Hibs will not get a fee for the homegrown Porteous if he runs down his contract and leaves at the end of the season and Johnson admits they will be open to negotiating with interested parties next month.

“We’re not shying away from the fact we will trade Ryan,” he said. “If the price is right and there is logic behind the offer we receive – and to date I don’t believe we’ve had any offers – and we can justify potentially bringing in a new recruit or pushing that money into various parts of the business, then of course we’ll look to do it.

“We’ve got enough bodies, so there is a succession plan.”

Ex-Arsenal defender hands Tony Mowbray fitness boost

Dan Ballard has handed Mowbray a fitness boost ahead of the weekend trip to Hull City.

The former Arsenal defender played an hour for the U21s on Monday following four months out with a foot injury.

On his return, he added: “I felt really good. Their striker was a good player and gave me a good test which was what I needed.

“All the lads played really well and I was impressed with the quality of the Under-21’s. I tried to do everything maximally and push myself to the limit. It was a good workout and a good game.

"With injuries, it always gives you time to work on other stuff especially in the gym. I am just hoping I have used the time wisely and I can come back and, after a few games, be fitter and stronger than I was before.”

Sunderland, beaten by West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light on Monday night are back in Championship action on Saturday, they travel to Hull City.
