Exclusive:'Three or four...' - Chris Waddle delivers verdict on Sunderland summer transfer priorities

Sunderland could be set for another big summer at the Stadium of Light...

Chris Waddle has argued that Sunderland need to sign “three or four more” players to bolster their squad this summer ahead of next season’s looming Europa League campaign.

The Black Cats spent heavily in the wake of their promotion from the Championship last year to assemble a squad that was ultimately able to seal continental qualification on the final day of the Premier League campaign, and for the most part, Waddle does not believe that Florent Ghisolfi and his recruitment team need to add too much more to the dressing room at the Stadium of Light over the coming weeks.

Speaking exclusively to The Echo, courtesy of NewBettingSites.uk, when asked where Sunderland need to strengthen this transfer window, Waddle responded: “Well, if you look at them, I think they don't score a massive amount of goals. [Brian] Brobbey's a big, strong centre-forward - a really strong player. I think they just need to top up and look and think, ‘Right, creativity - maybe can they create a little bit more?’

“Defensively, I think it's just adding players to what they've got. I’d get a full-back in, a centre-half, another midfield player, another striker or a winger. So you're looking at three or four, maybe five players.

“If you can get three or four in, strengthen the squad, and have more competition, you never know. I expect them to do well in the Europa League, and there's no reason why they can't go again, top half again, in the Premier League if they add three or four more players.”
