Sunderland began their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 win of AZ Alkmaar.
Enzo Le Fee’s penalty proved the difference in a good game against strong opposition. Here’s how we rated all the Black Cats involved on the night...

9. RW - Trai Hume
Went close with a couple of decent efforts, with one half volley dropped just wide of the far post. Made a huge covering challenge early on to deny what would have been an almost certain goal but was late to one or two challenges. 6 | Chris Fryatt, Sunderland Echo

10. LW - Malick Fofana
Showed good footwork at times but didn’t really get at his defender as much as Sunderland would have liked. Deserves big credit for his last action of the game, making a super challenge right on the edge of his own box from which the hosts broke to win the penalty. 6 | Malick Fofana. 11. ST - Wilson Isidor
Did some really good things in the first half, unlucky not to get an assist when he met Mukiele’s through ball and crossed perfectly for le Fee who struck the post. Couldn’t really get into the second half and was replaced after the opener. 6

12. Sub - Brian Brobbey
Carried the ball well and held it up when required, but just lacked a little bit of sharpness in front of goal. 6 | Getty Images
