Sunderland began their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 win of AZ Alkmaar.
Enzo Le Fee’s penalty proved the difference in a good game against strong opposition. Here’s how we rated all the Black Cats involved on the night...
5. LB - Reinildo
Was tested a little bit late on as the game broke open and AZ pushed forward but this was a very solid defensive performance that was key to his side’s win. 7 | Chris Fryatt, Sunderland Echo
6. CM - Granit Xhaka
Really smart in his defensive play against a good AZ side who moved it nicely. Played some good passes throughout and was an important part of the win. 7 | Getty Images
7. CM - Noah Sadiki
Good energy to break forward and slide Le Fee in for the penalty. A quiet game on the ball but he was very effective off it, breaking up play and relieving pressure. 7 | AFP via Getty Images
8. CM - Enzo Le Fee
Got away with one loose pass early doors but was outstanding thereafter. Hit the post with one effort and was at the heart of all his team’s good play. Won the penalty and converted it so calmly just days after his Arsenal miss. Best showing of the season and a big step forward. 9 | Getty Images
