With a number of fringe players and youngsters handed a chance, it was an opportunity for many to catch the of the Black Cats’ boss ahead of the international break.
So who took that opportunity, and who has work to do? Scroll down and click through the pages as Phil Smith dishes out his merit marks from the Group A victory:
5. Denver Hume
It says much about his growth as a player that you expected him to dominate a game such as this. It says even more that he actually did so, a constant threat going forward and dominant in defence. Excellent yet again. 8 Photo: Frank Reid
6. Jack Diamond
Was one of Sunderland’s brightest outlets early on, driving forward and putting in some dangerous crosses. He’s a thrilling player to watch and adds something completely different to the side, even if he was quieter in the second half before his brilliant late finish. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
7. Max Power
Made a composed return to the starting XI after a hamstring problem, driving his team on and looking after the ball well. A string of early shots yielded no reward. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
8. George Dobson
Took a little while to get into the contest, which was perhaps unsurprising given that he had been unavailable since the opening day of the season. Really grew into it, stepping on to the ball strongly and making a string of good interceptions and tackles to drive his team up the field. A good return. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
