Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw against Bristol City at the Stadium of Light

Jack Clarke opened the scoring just before the hour mark when he cut in from the right and fired a shot into the top corner.

Tony Mowbray’s side appeared to be heading towards a third consecutive victory before Trai Hume brought down substitute Jay Dasilva in the box, allowing Nahki Wells to convert from the penalty spot.

Here’s how the game played out:

RECAP: Sunderland 1 (Clarke, 59) Bristol City 1 (Wells, 90+3)

  • Sunderland XI: Patterson, Hume, Ballard, O’Nien, Alese, Neil, Michut (O’Nien, 62), Roberts (Ekwah, 86), Amad, Clarke (Cirkin, 86) , Gelhardt (Pritchard, 62)

Ballard has taken a few hits so far and was on the end of a hefty challenge from Mehmeti there.

The tackle was right in front of Mowbray who wasn’t impressed.

That looked like 1-0 Bristol City but somehow Patterson has kept the ball out.

Sykes played the ball to Mehmeti who cut in from the right before Patterson tipped his low effort onto the post.

Sunderland then managed to scramble the ball away after a Bristol City corner.

25’ Clarke cross overhit

Sunderland have just got a bit sloppy in possession, while the rain is now coming down pretty heavy now.

Clarke has just made a probing run down the left but overhit his cross.

32’ O’Leary quick off his line

There is space in behind Bristol City’s defence which Sunderlad could exploit.

Clarke almost latched onto a pass down the left there but O’Leary was quick off his line and managed to clear.

35’ Chance for Gelhardt

That was Sunderland’s best chance of the match so far.

Michut played an excellent ball out to Clarke on the left and the latter then picked out Gelhardt with a low cross.

The Leeds loanee couldn’t direct his low effort on target.

Sykes goes down in the Sunderland box and was looking for a penalty.

Nothing given by the referee.

40’ Roberts causing problems

Roberts has looked like Sunderland’s most dangerous attacking player and almost created an opening there after a run down the right.

The winger then cut the ball back to Gelhardt who had to take a touch before his shot from inside the box was blocked by Vyner.
