The Black Cats dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough against the compact visitors.

Blackpool posed more of a threat after the interval, especially from set-pieces, yet neither side could find a winning goal.

Sunderland also used all five substitutes and handed a debut to new signing Edouard Michut.

Here’s how the game played out:

32’ Sunderland stepping it up

That was a much better passage of play from Sunderland who looked to move the ball quickly to Clarke on the left.

The winger collided with Lavery on the edge of the box and there were a few appeals for a penalty, yet nothing was given.

Sunderland then kept the move alive before Clarke cut in from the flank to force a save from Maxwell.

Now Connolly is down and receiving treatment for the visitors.

38’ More efforts blocked

Sunderland are working the ball into some decent areas but, like on Saturday, haven’t quite had that cutting edge.

Embleton played the ball to Amad inside the box there but the forward was quickly surrounded by Blackpool players before Thompson blocked his shot.

The ball then came back to Roberts whose effort was also blocked by the same defender.

42’ Alese stopped

Like in previous games Alese has looked to get forward from left-back.

He made another offensive run into the box there to support Clarke, before Ekpiteta got in the way.

45’ Over from Pritchard

That was a free-kick in a promising position after Pritchard was brought down by Thornley.

The Sunderland playmaker then stepped up to take the set-piece but sent his effort over the bar.

45+1’ Big chance for Clarke

Big chance for Clarke on the stroke of half-time after he cut in from the left but sent his effort over from close range.
