The Black Cats dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough against the compact visitors.

Blackpool posed more of a threat after the interval, especially from set-pieces, yet neither side could find a winning goal.

Sunderland also used all five substitutes and handed a debut to new signing Edouard Michut.

Here’s how the game played out:

How Sunderland have started

A bright start from the hosts as Alese is released on the left and sends a low cross into the box.

Maxwell had to parry the ball away in the Blackpool goal.

9’ Neat passing from Sunderland

Sunderland have seen most of the ball so far, with Blackpool sitting deep.

The hosts have played some neat passing moves in what looks like a 4-3-3 system with Evans at the base of midfield, and Pritchard and Embleton just ahead of him.

That is the closest we’ve come to a goal so far.

Clarke did well to charge between two Blackpool players and pass the ball to Embleton inside the penalty area.

The latter then twisted into a shooting position before curling an effort onto the top of the crossbar.

17’ Chance for Blackpool

Mowbray has admitted his side could be vulnerable from set-pieces, and they lost two aerial duels following a free-kick there.

The ball eventually fell to Connolly in the box, yet the defender sent his low effort wide.

22’ O’Nien blocks

Blackpool have just started to pose more of a threat in the last few minutes.

First Wright made a run from midfield before hitting an effort off target from the edge of the box.

The midfielder found himself in a shooting position again moments later but O’Nien blocked his effort.
