Sunderland’s preparations for the 2024/25 campaign are officially underway.
The players reported back for pre-season testing on Friday and began their training programme today, which was also Régis Le Bris’ first day officially in charge of the Black Cats. Sunderland will now have a solid two-week training block before the squad splits for friendlies against Gateshead and South Shields, with the pre-season tour of Spain to follow. Here, we run through the state of play with every player currently in Le Bris’ senior squad and make a summer transfer window prediction for each and every one...

25. Jewison Bennette
Will return for pre-season with a point to prove after a difficult loan in Greece, albeit one that was heavily impacted by injury. Has a lot of competition for his place and so another loan, hopefully with a better outcome, has to be seen as a distinct possibility. Easy to remember how young he is, still has so much time to develop and be a success at the club - but needs to be playing regular senior football. Photo: Frank Reid

26. Romaine Mundle
Should have a big part to play this season after six months settling into his new club. Showed potential at times last season and will be looking to kick on. | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

27. Abdoullah Ba
Is still very young with much time to develop but it still feels like a big season for Ba after two years at the club. Has shown real promise at times and had a good first half of last season, but suffered again from being moved around the pitch and drifting in and out of the time thereafter. Needs a settled position, a run of games and to then take that chance. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

28. Jack Clarke
Sunderland have put a big valuation on Clarke and rightly so given some of the fees spent by Premier League clubs in recent days. It's going to be an interesting summer: with two years left on his deal there's no need to sell just now and yet at the same time, that there is so little sign of a new deal being agreed means the Black Cats would have to consider a huge bid. A hefty sell-on owed to Spurs will further strengthen their resolve to accept only a big bid. Clarke is in no rush to leave, but would clearly be open to a top-tier move if the bid worked for Sunderland. Has to be a good chance he goes, which would leave a significant hole in the team and squad. His future could have a knock-on effect for the likes of Ba and Mundle, who may need a loan or permanent move to guarantee more regular football if he stays. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images
