Boro named a strong starting XI which included experienced defender Sol Bamba, so it was always going to be a tough test for the young Black Cats.

Anthony Patterson, who has played two league games for the senior side this season, started in goal for Sunderland and had a busy afternoon between the sticks.

Elliott Dickman’s side fell 2-0 down before half-time after goals from Harry Green and William Kokolo, while Josh Coburn added a third in the second half.

Sunderland pulled a goal back through defender Tyrese Dyce but it was too little too late for the hosts.

RECAP: Sunderland U23s 1 Middlesbrough U23s 3

Key Events

  • SAFC lose 3-1: Coburn (2), Green & Dyce with the goals
  • Sunderland XI: Patterson, Richardson, Younger, Almond, Dyce, Scott, Sonha, Kachosa, Wearne, Kimpioka, Harris.
  • Subs: Carney, Newall, Jessup, Chapman, Kelly.

Sol Bamba comes off, replaced by Jack Hannah.

Dyce clears an effort off the line as Gibson turns a Folarin cross towards goal.

Boro been the better side in the second half. Much better intensity from them.

Coburn is going off with a minor injury shortly after that missed chance.

Sam Folarin is on to replace him.

Coburn bursts through on goal but it’s a big stop from Anthony Patterson to prevent him making it four.

That third really took the wind out of Sunderland’s sails.

Bit better through the last five or so, and went close from a couple of set pieces.

Really poor defending.

Boro get in down the right, Patterson spills the initial effort and it’s turned over the line as Younger and Coburn scramble to meet it.

The scoreline barely begins to tell the story.

Sunderland have been punished for two really soft bits of defending, right at the start and end of the half.

In between they’ve done all the running, missing chance after chance.

They’ve played some really good stuff, but the defensive issues are costing them again at the moment.

Remarkable.

Kokolo gets free down the left.

Cuts it across, and Coburn smashes it into the top corner.

Gretat pressing from Dyce wins him the ball back in a dangerous position, but his effort is just over the bar.

Literally seconds later Harris rolls Vernal and gets his shot away.

Easy save for Daniels in the end.
