Sunderland’s season is drawing towards a disappointing conclusion and thoughts are turning to what is going to be a crucial summer rebuild.
Interim head coach Mike Dodds has said that recruitment planning is under way behind the scenes at the Academy of Light, with change expected after the appointment of a new boss at the end of the campaign. So what’s likely to happen as it stands, and how could that change over the course of the summer months?
Here we assess the 33 players in Sunderland’s senior squad over the course of this campaign and whether they are likely to stay, go, or head out on loan in the summer transfer window…

21. JOBE BELLINGHAM
There will definitely be suitors for Bellingham, who has shown tactical flexibility and a maturity well beyond his years in his first season on Wearside. That he has also demonstrated an eye for goal at times only adds to his potential value. Sense at the moment, though, is another year at least to find a settled position and kick on from this encouraging campaign would be best. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

22. CHRIS RIGG
Rigg has a huge decision to make as he turns 17 in June and becomes eligible for his first professional contract. There will be interest from some of the very biggest clubs and that will be tempting, but Sunderland will hope the trust they have shown in him across the season and especially in recent weeks convinces him to stay. Rigg loves it at Sunderland and is keen to be playing first-team football next season, so there are definitely reasons to be optimistic. One to watch very closely. Verdict: (Hopefully) staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

23. BRADLEY DACK
Hasn’t been able to keep fit long enough to really force his way into the reckoning on a regular basis. Brought off at half time last Saturday and hard to see the club taking up their option of a one-year extension as things stand. Verdict: Going | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

24. ROMAINE MUNDLE
Has had a taste of Championship football since his January arrival and will want to push for more next season, meaning it will be a big pre-season for him to stake his claim and especially if Jack Clarke does leave. You wouldn’t rule out a loan if further arrivals leave him down the pecking order, but looks a fairly certain squad player for now. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
