Sunderland’s season is drawing towards a disappointing conclusion and thoughts are turning to what is going to be a crucial summer rebuild.
Interim head coach Mike Dodds has said that recruitment planning is under way behind the scenes at the Academy of Light, with change expected after the appointment of a new boss at the end of the campaign. So what’s likely to happen as it stands, and how could that change over the course of the summer months?
Here we assess the 33 players in Sunderland’s senior squad over the course of this campaign and whether they are likely to stay, go, or head out on loan in the summer transfer window…

17. DAN NEIL
Is admired by a lot of top-tier clubs due to his consistency and rapid improvement. Is under a long-term contract at the club and is keen to lead them back to the Premier league and take his Sunderland journey full circle - meaning he seems likelier to stay than leave at this stage at least. One that could definitely change given the calibre of clubs interested. Verdict: Staying, probably | Getty Images Photo: Ed Sykes

18. CALLUM STYLES
Has shown more consistent flashes of his ability now that he is moved into a more natural wing-back position over the last few weeks. Dan Neil’s injury may now present Sunderland with a valuable opportunity to see how he fares in midfield before the end of the campaign. At the moment, probably hasn’t cemented his place to push the club to commit to what would be a relatively significant outlay. Verdict: Going, as it stands | Frank Reid

19. JAY MATETE
Has had another injury-hit campaign, though Sunderland are hoping that he will be able to start pre-season training after surgery on a knee problem. Needs to be playing regularly at this stage of his career, but hard to tell whether he’ll be able to do that on Wearside before he gets a chance to build his match sharpness and recapture his best level in pre season. Verdict: Possibly going, loan or permanent | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

20. ELLIOT EMBLETON
After a very frustrating 18 months due to injury, Embleton just needs to get fit and get a full pre season under his belt. His priority will be to play, wherever that may be. Can be a very good squad player if fully fit. Verdict: Staying, depending on how Sunderland recruit in his positions | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
