Sunderland’s season is drawing towards a disappointing conclusion and thoughts are turning to what is going to be a crucial summer rebuild.
Interim head coach Mike Dodds has said that recruitment planning is under way behind the scenes at the Academy of Light, with change expected after the appointment of a new boss at the end of the campaign. So what’s likely to happen as it stands, and how could that change over the course of the summer months?
Here we assess the 33 players in Sunderland’s senior squad over the course of this campaign and whether they are likely to stay, go, or head out on loan in the summer transfer window…

9. LUKE O'NIEN
Has cemented his place at the heart of defence and is a key figure in terms of the club’s on and off-field leadership in what is a very young squad. Sunderland may look to try and get more competition for places in that part of the pitch but his place in the squad isn’t in question. Should Corry Evans depart then he is in line to become club captain having worn the armband in his injury-enforced absence. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

10. JENSON SEELT
Is expected to be out until around the new year as he recovers from a major knee injury. Was making good strides before and will be targeting a good second half to the season. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

11. AJI ALESE
Has made a strong return from injury just weeks after agreeing a new long-term contract at the club. Knows he needs a good pre-season and stay injury free to realise his potential - has been excellent whenever he has been fit since arriving from West Ham. A massive part of Sunderland’s plans for next year. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

12. LEO HJELDE
Has had an up and down first few months on Wearside, clearly not helped by the general disruption that has engulfed the club since the new year. Has very strong competition for places now and may hope for opportunities to impress over pre-season in what he says is his favoured position in the heart of defence. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
