Sunderland’s season is drawing towards a disappointing conclusion and thoughts are turning to what is going to be a crucial summer rebuild.
Interim head coach Mike Dodds has said that recruitment planning is under way behind the scenes at the Academy of Light, with change expected after the appointment of a new boss at the end of the campaign. So what’s likely to happen as it stands, and how could that change over the course of the summer months?
Here we assess the 33 players in Sunderland’s senior squad over the course of this campaign and whether they are likely to stay, go, or head out on loan in the summer transfer window…

5. TIMOTHEE PEMBELE
Has had a difficult first campaign on Wearside, mainly due to injury, but has managed to break into the team of late in a wing-back role. Needs a good pre-season and seems unlikely to start the next campaign as a regular starter, but will hopefully be able to kick on from a decent few weeks. Signed a five-year contract last summer, so a player Sunderland have invested in and will want to give plenty of time to. Verdict: Staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

6. TRAI HUME
Has had a very strong campaign and has earned a good break over the summer months. Hume is being tracked by a number of top-tier clubs and so while an exit can’t be ruled out, another campaign playing week in, week out on Wearside is surely best for all parties. Verdict: Likely staying, could attract interest | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid

7. NECTAR TRIANTIS
Has gained some valuable game time on loan at Hibs, though most of his recent appearances have been as a holding midfielder. That could offer Sunderland an interesting option through pre season and beyond, given their current lack of options in that position. New arrivals that would squeeze his game time could yet lead to another loan, but for now you’d expect him to stick around in a bid to try and break through to the team. Verdict: Staying, possible loan later in the window | Frank Reid Photo: FRANK REID

8. DAN BALLARD
Has caught the eye of a number of clubs after a campaign in which he has stayed injury-free and has performed impressively. Signed a new, long-term deal only last August so seems likely to stay at least for another year to try and build on his impressive progress. One who Sunderland would be loath to lose given his current importance to the team - so would take a huge bid. Verdict: Most likely staying | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
