The Black Cats boss made 11 changes to his starting XI following Saturday’s win at Bristol City, with Neil keen to give minutes to other members of his squad.

An excellent strike from Wednesday midfielder Dennis Adeniran put the hosts ahead in the 16th minute, before substitute Sylla Sow added a second after half-time.

Here’s how the match played out:

What to make of that side

So it’s 11 changes for Sunderland from the side which started at Bristol City on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see if the Black Cats line up with a back four or a back three but it looks like Jack Diamond will lead the line.

There’s no Leon Dajaku in the squad so he may have picked up a knock.

Under-21s players Michael Spellman and Caden Kelly are on the bench.

Sheffield Wednesday have made eight changes from their 1-0 win over MK Dons at the weekend.

Darren Moore on team selection

Here’s what Wednesday boss Darren Moore said about tonight’s match:

“It is a quick turnaround. We have got a game on the Saturday in the league. We will try and pick the right squad for the game on Wednesday.

“I will assess the squad and see where people are at. One or two people picked up knocks against MK Dons.

“It’s a game we will be taking very seriously, it’s a great cup tie at home in front of our own supporters and we look forward to the game.

“Lee Gregory is back for that game so we get another body back in him. We will have a look at who is available and how they are feeling in the squad given the quick turnaround.”

View from the Sheffield Wednesday end

Wednesday side have taken four points from their opening two League One fixtures this season, after drawing 3-3 with Portsmouth and winning 1-0 at MK Dons.

Neil is set to make several changes to his side for tonight’s match as he looks to hand minutes to other members of his squad.

We can expect the likes of Patrick Roberts, Luke O’Nien, Bailey Wright, Carl Winchester and Aji Alese to start the match, while Neil has said that Jack Diamond will also be involved.

“We’ve got guys at the moment who are highly unfortunate not to be in the team,” said Neil.

“It might be because of the shape we’re currently playing, which makes it difficult to fit them into the team because of the type of player they are.

“It might be based on the fact that they were chasing fitness a bit through pre-season and might not quite be ready to start the season, and some of them are just marginal calls.

“It’s definitely an opportunity for guys to show what they can do. To freshen things up a little bit, we’ve got so many games ahead that it’s really important we get minutes into legs and that means opportunity for people to put their claims forward.

“Every competition is important for different reasons.”
