Sunderland Under-23s conceded a last-gasp winner against Norwich Under-23s as the young Black Cats were beaten 4-3 at the Academy of Light.

Elliott Dickman handed starts to the likes of Benji Kimpioka, Ellis Taylor and Oliver Younger for the Premier League 2, Division 2, clash which turned into an action-packed contest.

Taylor, Will Harris and substitute Vinnie Steels got on the scoresheet for Sunderland but it wasn’t enough to secure the points as Norwich defender Jonathan Tomkinson headed home a late winner for the visitors.

Key Events

  • Sunderland Under-23s were beaten 3-2 by Norwich at the Academy of Light.
  • Jonathan Tomkinson scored a last-minute winner for the visitors
  • Ellis Taylor, Benji Kimpioka and Oliver Younger started for the Black Cats.

Sunderland have a leveller after some good work from Kimpioka on the left to beat his man and deliver a low cross.

Taylor had drifted into the box from the opposite flank and converted with a low finish.

Sunderland have been caught on the counter attack a couple of times already and eventually got punished.

A ball over the top was misjudged by Younger whose header was glanced behind him and allowed Tom Gibson-Peters to run through on goal and chip the goalkeeper.

Early chance for Norwich as Jon Rowe runs in behind Almond but Younger is able to cover and block the shot.

Sunderland have started in a 4-5-1 formation with Kimpioka on the left.

Let’s start with some transfer news.

Goalkeeper Jack McIntyre, 18, has signed a one-year deal at Sunderland and he will link up with the under-23 squad after a successful trial period.

The teenager arrives from Everton following the expiration of his contract at Goodison Park.

After signing terms on Wearside, McIntyre said: “Sunderland is a massive club and I’m delighted to be here. The players, staff and everyone around the place have made me feel very welcome and I can’t wait to get going now.”

Sunderland Under-23s boss Elliott Dickman added: “Jack has been on trial for a number of weeks, and we’ve been pleased with him. He’s going to add some quality to our group, and hopefully he’ll be in and around the first team in a training role.”
