Elliott Dickman’s side caused their host a manner of problems, but couldn’t find an elusive goal as they slipped to another defeat.
But how did their players perform? We’ve dished out our players ratings – with one of the three triallists on show really catching the eye. Scroll down and click through the pages to see our ratings:
9. STANLEY ASOMUGHA
Showed some tidy turns of pace and was well-equipped for the physical side of the game, even if his end product was sometimes lacking. A promising display, and he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. 6 | Getty Images Photo: Nick Taylor/Liverpool FC

10. TYLER FROST
Missed a fine chance to draw the Black Cats level in the first half when he dragged wide from a tight angle. Was wasteful in possession at times. Not the best of performances as he bids to win a deal. 5 | Getty Images Photo: Tony Marshall
11. TYLER HAMILTON
The best of the three triallists on the evening, Hamilton looked a constant threat on the left flank and provided some real moments of quality at both ends. Certainly worth another look. 7 | Getty Images Photo: Clive Brunskill
12. CIERAN DUNNE (FOR ASOMUGHA 68)
Saw little of the ball following his introduction as Newcastle saw out victory. 5 | JPIMedia Resell Photo: FRANK REID
