The Black Cats dominated large spells but couldn’t make their superiority pay, while the late dismissal of Tom Flanagan saw them forced to defend in the dying stages.

5. Luke O'Nien
Got into some encouraging positions in the first half but his side were unable to make the most of them. Defended resolutely and gave nothing up to his opponents. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
Probably his quietest game of the season so far. Unusually, the vast majority of Sunderland’s attacking threat, particularly in the first half, came down the right flank. Defensively the youngster was rarely troubled and did his work with little fuss. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
