A fine first-half performance saw the hosts register a thumping win at the Stadium of Light, handing Parkinson his first three points since joining the club. But which players caught the eye in the dominant performance? Scroll down and click through the pages to see how our chief Sunderland AFC writer, Phil Smith, rated the individual performances in the League One triumph:
9. Chris Maguire
Quiet in the second half, but still popped up with a big defensive clearance. Had done all the damage in the first moments of the game, scoring a clever free-kick and releasing Watmore for the third with a fine pass. 8 Photo: FRANK REID
10. Duncan Watmore
A display that marked his arrival this season. First and foremost, a big barrier cleared to play 70 minutes just days after starting on Saturday. He was a constant thorn in Tranmere’s side, constantly making good runs off the shoulder, scoring one and assisting two others. Superb. 9 Photo: FRANK REID 2019
11. Will Grigg
Got the goal he so needed and so deserved when tapping home in the closing minutes. Most importantly, he led the line with skill and determination, assisting Watmore with a fine pass to get his side up and running. 8 Photo: FRANK REID
12. Marc McNulty
Came on at a good time but looked much livelier than in his recent appearances, almost scoring a fine individual goal before providing the assist for Grigg. 7 Photo: FRANK REID
