Regis Le Bris issues team news update and Romaine Mundle return timeframe ahead of Sunderland vs Leeds United

Sunderland face Leeds United in the Premier League on Tuesday evening.

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has delivered a team news update and an anticipated timeline for Romaine Mundle’s recovery after undergoing hamstring surgery ahead of Tuesday evening’s Premier League clash with Leeds United.

The Black Cats face a tight turnaround ahead of their trip to Elland Road, having drawn with Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime. That contest was significant insofar that it marked Granit Xhaka’s return to the starting XI following an ankle complaint, while Bertrand Traore came off the bench for a cameo following a lengthy stint on the treatment table.

And looking ahead to his side’s midweek test in Yorkshire, Le Bris confirmed that both players will be fine to feature in his matchday squad, while also suggesting that he had no major fresh concerns to contend with.

What did Regis Le Bris say about Sunderland’s injury news ahead of Leeds United clash?

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, the head coach explained: “Nothing new to report at the minute, which is good. Because against Fulham it was probably the worst experience we've had this season so far. We still have one or two minor doubts, which is normal in a quick turnaround between two fixtures. We'll probably make the decision late, but at the minute they are okay.”

Le Bris then broadened his focus to the list of players he currently has sidelined with more substantial issues, including the likes of Mundle, Jocelin Ta Bi, Nordi Mukiele, Brian Brobbey, Reinildo Mandava, and Dennis Cirkin.

He continued: “For the injuries, they have to recover. For Romaine we know it will probably be long but it's important to recover properly. We'll support him. It will be the case for Jocelin as well. For the others it will be one, two, three weeks depending on their situations.”

On Mundle, who also underwent surgery on his other hamstring over the summer, he added: “It's not an easy period. We are supporting him. He's very young and had more or less the same injury last season and beginning of this one. It's another injury on the other hamstring.

“I hope at the end he'll be fixed. You create your resilience and character in this kind of situation. It's not easy but it is what it is. We try to stay connected with him. The medical staff is really strong and the coaching staff and teammates will stay connected with him. We can't do more.

“It's not an easy situation, especially when you are young. You can face these challenges maybe when you are 25, 26, 27 but it's a bit harder when you are so young.”

Addressing a potential timeframe for the winger’s return, Le Bris said: “Probably the same timeline he had before. Probably around eight weeks, six to 10 depending on his recovery.”

Le Bris went on to confirm that Ta Bi, who was withdrawn during his Premier League debut against Fulham at the Stadium of Light last weekend, may also require surgery. He said: “It's still an assessment at the minute. It might be necessary.”
