After a goalless first half in terrible weather conditions, the Black Cats came under pressure at the start of the second half.
Yet it was the visitors who took the lead ten minutes after the interval when Alex Pritchard scored against his former club.
Manchester United loanee Amad then added a second in stoppage time.
Our Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his player ratings from The John Smith’s Stadium:
13. Dan Neil (sub) - 7
Tenacious and more often than not made good contributions on the ball, an important cameo. 7 Photo: Martin Swinney
14. Abdoullah Ba (sub) - 7
One or two moments of slight naivety but generally handled the ball nicely and was really combative. Will take time but Sunderland have a genuine gem here. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
15. Jay Matete (sub) - 7
Made one brilliant challenge to snuff out a counter attack and helped see it out. 7 Photo: FRANK REID PHOTOGRAPHER 2022
16. Jewison Bennette (sub) - N/A
Little chance to make an impact, brought on very late. N/A Photo: Frank Reid
