After a goalless first half in terrible weather conditions, the Black Cats came under pressure at the start of the second half.
Yet it was the visitors who took the lead ten minutes after the interval when Alex Pritchard scored against his former club.
Manchester United loanee Amad then added a second in stoppage time.
Our Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his player ratings from The John Smith’s Stadium:

9. Alex Pritchard - 7
Well short of his best for the opening exchanges, albeit from a left wing position he wouldn’t normally operate from. Was jeered and mocked by the home fans when he slipped over attempting a cross early in the second half, at which point he transformed to his very best and scored the crucial goal. A big impact, in the end. 7 Photo: Frank Reid

10. Amad - 8
First half passed him by a bit and while less influential than on Saturday he found a way to make an even bigger impact, playing his part in the opener and then scoring late on. Deserved that. 8 Photo: Frank Reid

11. Leon Dajaku - 4
Missed a big chance to get on the scoresheet after getting into a really good position at the back post. Struggled to make any impact after that and no great surprise he made way for Simms at half time. 4 Photo: Frank Reid

12. Ellis Simms (sub) - 7
Added a late assist and though clearly not at his sharpest he was an important focal point for his side. 7 Photo: Martin Swinney
