Here’s how Phil Smith rated the Sunderland players at the Stadium of Light:
5. Callum Styles - 6
Didn’t have much of a chance to impact in the final third despite starting in quite an aggressive position. Got through the game defensively and helped his side eke out an important clean sheet. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
Fortunate to get away with one late error on the ball but was Sunderland’s best player in possession by a considerable distance. The only one really to open up the game at times with his forward passing. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
Put in a good shift in a physical battle with Jack Colback but didn’t carve out many chances. Moved up front late on but didn’t have much of a sight of goal. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
Didn’t do enough to trouble Jimmy Dunne, who was playing out of position at right back. Got past him once or twice but created very little and was withdrawn early in the second half. Is struggling to build on a good start to the season. 4 Photo: Frank Reid
