Sunderland fell behind in the first half when Jake Hastie’s cross deflected into the visitors’ net off Ellis Taylor.
The Black Cats drew level on the stroke of half-time when Jack Diamond was brought down in the box and Elliot Embleton converted from the penalty spot.
Alex Neil’s side will now prepare for their Championship opener against Coventry at the Stadium of Light.
Our chief Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his player ratings from the Suit Direct Stadium:
1. Jacob Carney - 6
Had very little to do after picking the ball out of his net two minutes in. Composed otherwise, including one lovely Cruyff turn in his own box. Decent stop from Umerah late on. 6 Photo: National World
2. Carl Winchester - 6
Rarely stretched as Sunderland controlled the contest after conceding an early goal. Sat in to allow Hume to drive forward in front of him. Steady enough. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
3. Danny Batth - 7
Showed his class and experience in another strong showing. Must be a strong contender to start on Sunday based on what we have seen from pre-season. 7 Photo: FRANK REID 2022
4. Aji Alese - 6
Beaten too easily in the build up to the first goal but settled thereafter. Won his challenges and moved the ball out from the back calmly. 6 Photo: Frank Reid
