Luton Town v Sunderland - live updates

RLB on Roberts decision

We need to manage our team - we know before that it could be this atmosphere and we thought that Alan could well face this kind of challenge as he did it well at Luton last season. He did. At the end of the game, Patrick was very useful for us because he was fresh - able to keep the ball and defend with the team. I think it was a good choice in the end.

It was a good game for Chris, as well.

The verdict from Regis Le Bris

I'm delighted, and tired! After Hull, this was the opposite. It was a strong style of play, very difficult to face. Direct play, second balls, strong counter pressing and so on. They played very well this kind of football, it's very hard to escape this kind of pressure. We started well and after, we struggled to apply pressure to their back three. We changed our shape and it was better. We conceded a lot of set plays and did well in these phases.

In the second half, we knew with their man-for-man marking we would have space to create chances. Even after conceding we kept this idea, and I'm very proud of the team spirit and the behaviour of the fans - they were very strong and behind us. It's a good win, a strong battle.

More on those full-time scenes

So, as far as we can tell, O’Nien and Jobe were booked as a result of those late scenes.

Holmes and Morris from the Luton side.

Mepham did well not to react in the face of some pretty clear goading from Kaminski. Would imagine the FA will have a looking at all of that in the days ahead.

But only added to the feeling of a brilliant, tenacious away win. Great scenes as the players celebrated with the fans. Sunderland showed a real mettle tonight.

The referee is still dishing out the yellow cards.

Morris and O’Nien have definitely got one.

Luton want a penalty before the end - claiming Connolly handballed.

Huge scrum in the middle of the pitch but it’s starting to settle now.

And still they come forward. Keeper is up...

Clark has to score!

Long ball drops into his path and he volleys well wide. Didn’t get the connection right. Goodness.

Leo Hjelde on for Rigg in the closing stages.

Patterson comes for a long ball and drops it, but he does well to recover it and get it away from Morris.

90 minutes played...

Luton throw on Taylor for Hashioka.

We’re into five minutes of stoppage time.

A free kick from Doughty causes Sunderland all sorts of problems but they just about get it clear. Neil then feeds Connolly on the break and great defending from Doughty prevents the goal.

Browne then does well to buy a foul.

Very good from Connolly, who buys a foul with a nice bit of hold-up play. A chance for Sunderland to breathe.

Corner to the front post breaks very well for Holmes... who blazes over. Big chance but Sunderland did very well to narrow the angle.

Six minutes of normal time to play.

78 mins - Changes from both sides

Roberts on for Mundle.

Cauley Woodrow replaces Krauss for Luton.

Moments before, Luke O’Nien made a brilliant block to deny Luton. Mepham headed clear the corner under pressure before Moses blazed an effort over.

What a moment earlier in the half...
