Luke O'Nien facing an extended spell on the sidelines as Sunderland handed two fresh injury worries

O’Nien was withdrawn late in added time during the week and is now set to be absent until the New Year – with further tests scheduled this week to determine the full extent of the injury.

The wing-back is one of two fresh absentees for the Black Cats ahead of the visit of Wigan on Saturday afternoon, with Charlie Wyke also set to miss the clash.

Wyke picked-up a knee injury in the first half of Tuesday’s 1-1 draw and, while his absence is not expected to be a long-term one, the visit of the Latics will likely come too soon.

Aiden O’Brien is a doubt for the clash with Wigan, but Aiden McGeady will return to the fold over a year since his last appearance at the Stadium of Light.
