Aiden McGeady set to make Sunderland return against Wigan Athletic

Aiden McGeady is set to return to the first-team picture at Sunderland – a year since his last senior appearance for the Black Cats.

The former Everton and Celtic winger fell out of favour under Phil Parkinson and was made to train with the Black Cats’ under-23 side.

And having recovered from an injury sustained over the summer, McGeady now looks set to return to the fold against Wigan on Saturday afternoon.

It will be the first time the 34-year-old has been involved in a first-team squad on Wearside since November 26, 2019.

The club confirmed McGeady’s return in a teasing social media post – which has led many to believe a new managerial appointment may be just around the corner too.

Danny Cowley remains the favourite with the bookmakers, with Lee Johnson, Gus Poyet and Paul Cook all also available at short odds.

And the arrival of a new man in the dugout could herald a new beginning for McGeady.
