Former Sunderland captain 'set for Rangers talks' ahead of major future decision
A former Sunderland star is reportedly set for talks with Scottish giants Rangers and has interest from Premier League newcomers Coventry City.
Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil is facing a major decision over his future as his Black Cats contract comes to a close this summer.
The midfielder effectively brought an end to his time with his boyhood club in January when he agreed to see out the rest of his deal with a loan spell at Ipswich Town and he has gone on to help the Tractor Boys earn promotion into the Premier League during his stay in Suffolk.
In an emotional statement penned after his departure from Sunderland was confirmed, the Academy of Light product said: “Above everything else, I would like to take this opportunity say thank you. To my coaches and team-mates, past and present, who were not only good professionals but great people, and to the wider staff and fans for supporting me throughout all the experiences we shared together. I’m proud of what we achieved during my time at the Club and for playing my part in taking it back to where it belongs, the Premier League. Captaining Sunderland was a boyhood dream that came true, and as a supporter for life, I’m excited to see what’s next on the journey.”
Neil has gone on to secure a second consecutive promotion into the Premier League after making 17 appearances for Ipswich during the second half of the season as Kieran McKenna’s side landed runners-up spot in the Championship. However, a permanent move to Portman Road is not expected to be on the agenda this summer as Neil’s Sunderland deal comes to an end.
Coventry City are believed to have shown an interest in the midfielder as they prepare for life in the Premier League after being crowned as winners of the Championship - but there are now reports suggesting Rangers are set to open talks with Neil about a possible move to Ibrox. Journalist Alan Nixon has reported the former Black Cats captain will hold talks with the Scottish giants and a move to Glasgow could appeal to Neil as he would be able to play a part in helping Danny Rohl’s side compete in European competition and look to challenge the likes of Celtic and Hearts for major domestic silverware.
