Florent Ghisolfi confirms contract extension after impressive Sunderland display at York City

Sunderland have secured the future of highly-rated Ukrainian winger Timur Tutierov following an impressive year of development at under-21 and senior level

Sunderland have confirmed that Timur Tutierov has signed a new contract with the club.

The 21-year-old has committed his future to the Black Cats after underlining his potential during Saturday’s 5-1 pre-season victory over York City. Tutierov scored once and provided an assist at the LNER Community Stadium and produced an impressive overall performance after being included in Régis Le Bris’ first-half starting XI.

His new deal represents a significant show of faith from Sunderland and recognises the progress he has made since arriving from Ukrainian club Kolos Kovalivka in April 2023. Tutierov enjoyed an excellent start to the 2025-26 campaign with Sunderland’s under-21s, scoring six goals and providing one assist across only seven Premier League 2 appearances.

Those performances earned the winger his first experience of senior football in England when he joined Exeter City on loan. Tutierov subsequently registered three goals and one assist in 17 League One appearances, gaining valuable experience before returning to the Academy of Light this summer.

His future had appeared uncertain at the end of last season, when club sources suggested he could leave permanently in a deal similar to those agreed for fellow academy players Zak Johnson and Harrison Jones. There has since been a clear change in Sunderland’s thinking, with Tutierov now signing an extension which reflects the club’s belief in his long-term potential.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said: “We're delighted that Timur has committed his future to Sunderland. “This new contract is a reward for the progress he has made and the attitude he continues to show every day. He is humble, hardworking and eager to learn, and those qualities have been central to his development.

“Timur represents the type of young player we want to develop at this football club. We're committed to giving talented young players the opportunity to succeed when they're ready, and we're excited to see the next stage of his journey in red and white.”

Tutierov will now look to build on his eye-catching display at York over the remainder of pre-season. Another loan move could eventually be considered to provide regular senior minutes, although Sunderland’s involvement in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions may also create opportunities for the winger within Le Bris’ squad.
