A number of eye-catching deals were sealed as Premier League and Championship clubs looked to offload the fringe players who didn’t move when the window for the top tiers shut earlier in August.
So who have underlined their promotion credentials and who looks set for a tough few months before the January window opens? Phil Smith gives his verdict on every club's work over the summer months and where they now stand….
17. Rotherham United
Lost the key players in their impressive attempt to beat the drop last season, as expected. Freddie Ladapo and Dan Barlaser were savvy additions given how well they played in this division last year, while the arrival of Jake Hastie gives them depth they were lacking out wide. B- Photo: George Wood
18. Shrewsbury Town
Deadline day arrival of Callum Lang caught the eye. They had recruited well in other areas of the summer, signing the likes of Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Sean Goss. Have options all over the park now and Sam Ricketts will surely be expected to deliver a play-off push. B+ Photo: Morgan Harlow
19. Southend United
Lost their best talent in Dru Yearwood and otherwise struggled to improve a squad that struggled for much of last year. Look in dire straits early on in the season. E Photo: Stu Forster
20. Sunderland
Have improved their centre-back options, a big problem last season. Kept Aiden McGeady and Marc McNulty looks a fine challenger for Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke. Look in good order despite a disappointing display against Peterborough. A- Photo: FRANK REID
