Here, we take a look back through the archives at eight former Sunderland players who have had the last laugh when they faced their former club in recent seasons.
The likes of Darren Bent, David Meyler and Frazier Campbell all feature in our photo gallery of former players who had had the last laugh.
1. Mikael Mandron
The striker only made three appearances for Sunderland between 2013 - 2016. However, it was his double for Gillingham last Saturday which will live longer in the memories of Sunderland fans. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
2. Darren Bent
One of the more memorable ones as Bent’s goal set up a Burton Albion comeback which sealed Sunderland’s fate to League One. He netted 32 goals in 58 games for the Black Cats but is certainly not a fan favourite on Wearside. Photo: Matthew Lewis
3. Lewis Grabban
Grabban was a shining light under Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman during his loan spell from Bournemouth smashing in 12 goals in just 19 appearances. However, he wanted out of a relegation fight and was loaned out to Aston Villa the same season, who he scored for against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
4. Grant Leadbitter
Now back at the club for a second spell after making 111 appearances between 2003-2009, it was his penalty in 2018 which put Middlesbrough ahead in the Wear-Tees derby as the game finished 3-3 and both sides having a man sent off. Photo: Charlie Crowhurst
